Otis means well, he really does. But a homeless man
whose parts disappear and reappear with alarming
regularity is not the best person to turn a tragedy around.
Nevertheless, he perseveres in this cleverly crafted tale of
loss and recovery.
Taking shelter in the cozy warmth between a thorny hedge
and the outside wall of a house in the Panhandle of Texas,
Otis comes to regard the rich dark earth as his bed and the
interior wall of the hedge, with its convenient cubbies
formed by branches, as his home. And he regards the
family within the house as his own beloved family. He
admires the exasperated patience of the copper-haired
father and the firm guidance of the peach-haired mom. He
is in awe of their teenage son, who shines with the
brilliance of a young god. And he doesn’t know what to
think of the twin girls who laugh and dance absolutely all
the time.
So when tragedy strikes he interferes in a most
astonishing way.
And what he and the family he cares for learn is that
reactions can’t be predicted and that the timeline of our
lives is not a straight sequence of events, but a
confounding labyrinth illuminated by inevitability and
caprice. Or, as Otis puts it, “What a rebounding sort of
world this is.”
